A mother comforts her child recovering from malaria at the Kalene Hill Mission Hospital located in a remote valley in Zambia along the Congo/Angola border. This portrait is from a story I did for @ナショナルジオグラフィック on global malaria that ran in July 2007 edition of the magazine.
Personal Notes — In recent weeks I've been witnessing numerous women in the act of giving the care and comfort that only a mother can radiate. While this is not a belated Mother's Day post — everyday should be a special day for mother's, not only on a singular commercialized day — whenever I see a women hold their child, this image of deep comfort and love comes to mind.
Related note, this child managed to survive a severe bout of malaria (the second largest killer on our planet after tuberculosis) by the support of this astonishing hospital located in one of the more remotest places on earth. The mother walked for more than a day, carrying her child to Kalene Hill Hospital, another deep act of love.
