“I could talk for days about wood,” admits Philadelphia artist James McNabb (@mcnabbstudio). “Its rich history. The amazing varieties of colors, patterns and textures that nature has created in it.” Inspired by his father, a skilled carpenter, James took his first woodworking class in high school. “At that time, I struggled with the typical textbook/chalkboard style classroom dynamic, and felt more comfortable in a setting with hands-on learning techniques,” he remembers. Now, with his own studio and over a decade of experience in making wooden objects, James, who’s 30, creates delicately detailed sculptures of urban landscapes. “Like a painter uses a paintbrush, I work primarily on a band saw to produce abstracted architectural forms,” he says, adding, “The work is designed to be engaging from a distance, and like a city skyline from afar, reveal layers of patterns and textures as the journey gets closer to the object.” Photo by @mcnabbstudio
