Eugenia Colon, who used to own a nail salon in Brooklyn, spent years molding sometimes 30 sets of nails a day, ignoring a persistent cough. It turns out that Eugenia developed sarcoidosis, which caused inflammation in her lungs. A growing body of medical research shows a link between some of the chemicals used to make nail and beauty products and serious health problems, ranging from miscarriages to lung diseases. Sarah Maslin Nir, a reporter at @ニューヨーク・タイムズ, interviewed more than 125 workers for an investigative story about nail salons in the New York area, and more in California. @bengiville, who took the photos, said many of her subjects were scared to be photographed — among other things, many of them are undocumented. “Reporting the story was extremely sensitive, and even the sight of a camera in many of the places would frighten people away.”
