In the village of Ban Khok Yai, along the Mekong River in Laos, three generations share dinner by candlelight—like 30 percent of Laotians, they lack electricity. Their village will be inundated when the nearby Xayaburi dam is completed.

National Geographic Magazine writer Michelle Nijhuis and photographer David Guttenfelder traveled the mighty Mekong to explore the ecological and cultural impact of dam construction on the river.
