After Cardinal Ratzinger became the first German Pope since nearly 500 years, many Germans were so excited that the country’s largest tabloid’s headline read “Wir sind Papst” (We are Pope). The birthplace of Pope Benedict XVI, Marktl in Bavaria, suddenly turned into a tourist destination. Its citizens made a quick buck by selling pope related souvenirs, most notably the Pope Beer, which became a popular brew in shops and pubs. Even after Benedict’s resignation the beer is still available.
