Photo by @edkashi/@viiphoto: Methane emissions, which can be largely attributed to the oil and gas industry, have a significant impact on global #climatechange. Nigeria’s oil industry emits tons of methane from gas flares, despite the fact that flaring has been illegal in #Nigeria since 1984. Flaring not only contributes to climate change and #globalwarming, but is also a waste of valuable resources. A recent article in the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ states “the amount of methane that escaped worldwide in 2012 was roughly 2.6 billion cubic feet and would have been worth $30 billion on the market.” Despite its wealthy oil market, a large number of Nigerians live in poverty and without enough energy supply. Health problems caused by living amongst these pollutants is also a serious issue. In this 2004 photo local Urohobo people bake tapioca in the heat of a gas flare in the oil town of Afiesere, Niger Delta. Since 1961, when the Shell Petroleum Development Company first opened this flow station, residents of the local community have worked in this way. @everydayclimatechange
