Photograph by @remibenali. Uncatchable, evanescent, almost like a ghost. Throughout France, the Arlesian woman is a myth. She is the person we are waiting for but who will never come, a chimeric being, a volatile creature that no one will ever possess. To quote the anthropologist Regis Meyrand in his book The Myth of the National Identity: " It all started in the 17th century when a statue of Aphrodite named the Venus of Arles was discovered and then offered to then French king, Louis XIV (today it can be seen in the Louvre Museum in Paris). This story revived the fact that the population of Arles has been home to an important sense of tradition, one dating back to Greco-Roman antiquity. The Arlesian woman then appears as the mirror-like double to this marble statue. She becomes the allegory of the Provence region, a survivor of the antique Mediterranean civilizations". The Provencal poets of the 19th century brought to life the proud silhouette of this gracious woman. Today still, the women in Arles compete in their best traditional attire and the people of Arles vote for their Queen, who is elected for a reign of 3 years. She is a true ambassador of the city and represents the singularity and pride of its inhabitants. The Arlesian woman has inspired the music composer Georges Bizet as well as the fashion designer Christian Lacroix, who was born in Arles. #france #provence #arles #arlesienne #tradition #ancientculture #christianlacroix #keepalwaysdiscovering #lifeisnotasquare
