According to sources at the Center, surrounding the eye on the surface of the skin are dermal denticles, which are actually equivalent to the scales of other fish. Sharks and rays have them. This is what we think of as "shark skin." These scales create tiny vortices that reduce drag, which makes swimming more efficient, as well as quieter compared to bony fishes. #PhotoArk
