The relationship between Tibet and China is very complex and dates back to 640 AD. But in October 1950, the Chinese Red Army invaded the "Land of the Snows" and the Tibetan people still live today under this occupation. Since 2008, the Chinese government has imposed drastic restrictions on monasteries, including brutal security raids, arbitrary detentions of monks, increased surveillance and a permanent police presence to monitor religious activities. The government has unleashed the harshest campaign of politically motivated investigations, detentions, and sentencing in the past decade, marking a sharp turn toward intolerance of criticism (Sources Human Rights Watch, World Report 2015). Occasionally and in the most desperate and tragic manner, the monks who loose hope do not find other way to claim the freedom of Tibet than through self-immolation. @humanrightswatch
