Musher Brent Sass (@bwildfree) puts booties on Chica, one of the dogs on his team, before leaving Eagle, Alaska. Sass was in the lead by 30 miles over musher Allen Moore when he arrived in Eagle yesterday. Foot care for the dogs is of the utmost importance during the race. The dogs wear booties to protect their feet from the snow and ice and receive attention at checkpoints from mushers, handlers and veterinarians who tend to their feet. Every year, mushers and dog teams competing in the Yukon Quest travel across 1,000 miles of frozen sub-Arctic wilderness, from Canada's Yukon Territory into the heart of the Alaskan interior. The race, less well known than the Iditarod but famous for being tougher, is unpredictable, exciting, and filled with colorful characters - it teaches us about the people and the cultures whose land it passes through.
