“People fear the unknown, so they tend to think what we do is out of control and crazy,” says Ryan Farmer (@farminghills), a 21-year-old professional street luger and downhill skateboarder who lives in Southern California. What may seem reckless is actually the culmination of years of careful practice and rigorous safety precautions. “In reality, my board can stop faster than a car traveling at the same speed.” Until three years ago, Ryan primarily used his skateboard to get around town. All that changed when a convenience store clerk showed him a downhill longboard. Today, Ryan exceeds 60 mph while skating and 75 mph while luging.

For the tightknit downhill skating community, safety trumps all. “Being able to control your speed, even on the steepest of roads, is a necessity of downhill sports,” Ryan explains. “We take pride in self-regulating the scene when someone is out of line, like riding without a helmet or skating a road beyond their limits.” Video by @farminghills
