Eomyrophis latispinus is a primitive Eocene eel that is distantly related to modern eels. The oldest fossil eels come from the Late Cretaceous, but their origins are obscure. Eels are related to bonefishes (albuloids), which appear in the Early Cretaceous. This specimen lived about 40 million years ago and was collected in Monte Bolca, Italy.
