Photo @mike_hettwer - SHIPBREAKING - There are over 100 shipbreaking yards just north of Chittagong, Bangladesh, and they typically dismantle 200 or more large ships each year. They focus on 25-30 year old oil tankers and container ships - and it takes from 3-6 months to completely “break” a ship. Just before a winter dawn, a young worker stays warm near a fire likely made from burning asbestos. He and two other sleeping workers wait for more ship sections to be winched into shore so they can be cut apart and eventually extruded into rebar. Workers have very little safety equipment and work 70+ hour weeks. There are hundreds of injuries each year and the environmental damage is extensive.
