Photograph by @paulnicklen for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. As a photojournalist I occasionally struggle with the line between unbiased story-telling/journalism and activism. However, in this situation, it is difficult not to have a biased stance especially after spending a summer with these shy and incredibly intelligent animals for a feature story on wolves. Over the next two months, the #BritishColumbia Government is targeting to kill 180 wolves from helicopters while using tax payer dollars. Decades of habitat destruction, hunting and human encroachment have left BC’s mountain caribou on the edge of collapse. Instead of protecting critical food and habitat for caribou, such as the lichen rich interior forests, the BC government has now placed the blame on wolves. Should wolves be killed because of negligence and mismanagement. Killing all the wolves in BC won’t bring the caribou back in the absence of habitat protection. Anytime we remove top predators such as sharks, bears, wolves, lions, and tigers from an ecosystem, we see that ecosystem severely impacted and often collapse.
