Photo by @Thomas Peschak Abalone are large shellfish that used to dominate the shallow rocky reefs and kelp forests of the southwest coast of South Africa. Over the last two decades poaching, fueled by a intense demand for abalone in Asia, has decimate South Africa's stocks very close to a point of ecological/functional extinction. To squeeze more into bags, the abalone meat is often removed underwater and the shells discarded on the reef. Almost 15 years ago, when I was a graduate student in marine biology I developed a method to estimate how long ago a poaching event occurred. The longer time had past, the greater the encrusting growth on the inside of the shell (covered by the animal when alive). Here my assistant Steve Benjamin swims over a field of turned over empty abalone shells.
