And in the middle of nowhere lives a family whose house is built by hand, with no work, no clean water around them, and no neighbors. They walk 3 kilometers a day just to fetch water from a river which is contaminated with bacteria and acids. Their meal is rice porridge and they eat once a day. Even on days where they have enough food, they save it for the next day because they are afraid that they will have nothing to eat tomorrow. The mother is pregnant. She is in her 9th month of pregnancy and the child is to be born any day now. They do not own a bike or a car to take the mother to a health center that is 20kms away. They are desperate, facing challenges everyday not knowing what to do but go on living with little that they have.
Today, they stand at a changing point in life. HOPE International has chosen them as a family who will receive a well. I will never forget the moment their faces lit up in happiness and the mother breaking into tears as she talked about how grateful she is to be able to save her children. There are many many more families in need in the region, in Cambodia, and everywhere around the world. There are no immdiate solutions to poverty, but there are solutions if we take the time to help them become self-reliant and offer them a higher education for sustainable development. Be the light.
