Photograph by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz Small needles of brittle stone only few inches tall emerge from the chalky floor of the White Desert near Farafra, Egypt. The white chalk has been sand-blasted by strong winds which carve at the softest parts first, leaving what apppear to be worm tubes from millions of years ago when the chalk was the muddy bottom of a sea.
