Photograph by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz I usually seek out the unusual and under-reported, but there is a reason that some places are on a bucket list, like Abu Simbel. It was strange to realize that this ancient monumental carving was cut out of a cliff, elevated and reassembled into an artificial mountain to protect it from the rising waters of the Aswan High Dam. What you see here is real from the 13th century BC, but behind the bas-reliefs is a hollow structure built in the 1960s, ten years after Disneyland. Thank God for foresight and commitment of #UNESCO to save this for all humankind! @thephotosociety @natgeocreative @anastasiaphoto1
