These colorful, yarn-like threads are actually neurons. Neuroscientists are studying the brain by lighting it up from the inside using fluorescent proteins from bioluminescent jellyfish. When proteins of a certain color are delivered to a cell, the cell will glow. This tissue sample is from the brain of a mouse aptly named “Brainbow.” Learn more about how we are seeing our brains in new ways at go.ted.com/brainbow
