Since 1986, the National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute has hatched more than 82 Guam rail chicks. Twenty-nine birds have been sent to Guam for reintroduction to the wild, and 25 more have been sent to other AZA breeding institutions. The birth of each chick has been a major conservation success. All of the Guam rails living around the world are descended from 21 founders.
Before the brown tree snake was introduced to the island of Guam in the 1950s, there were nearly 10,000 birds living there. The multiplying number of snakes, feeding on the birds and their eggs, decimated the population. By the 1980s, only a few individuals remained, and the last few birds were moved to Zoos in a final effort to save the species. About 118 rails have been reintroduced to two smaller islands, and are getting a second chance at survival as a result of the Guam rail Species Survival Plan. #WeSaveSpecies #SpeciesBeingSaved
