Image by @paulnicklen for @ナショナルジオグラフィック and @sea_legacy with @Cristina Mittermeier. An animal requires habitat in order to survive, and we cannot understand a species without understanding his ecosystem. The spirit bear, a ‘white’ black bear that is very rare, inhabits a lush coastal rainforest in British Columbia. Bears have a symbiotic relationship with their forest habitat; they help the trees grow by dragging salmon into the forest and fertilizing the soil, and the forest gives them a home. This is why increased industrial activity such as logging and pipeline development poses such a threat to these bears – without intact river valleys and a healthy rainforest to wander, they would have nowhere to live. This is the final image in @paulnicklen's 'Animals in their Environment' photo series this week. #spiritbear #britishcolumbia #whitebear #bear #greatbearrainforest #nature #natureisspeaking #forest #rainforest #notankers
