James Stewart already had more than 400 hours of flying time under his belt when he was drafted into the Army in late 1940, but was quickly rejected for being too thin. After bulking up a tad he finally was inducted in 1941. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1942 and then Captain in '43. At this point he was 35 and still hadn't seen any action, which upset him. But in December of '43 was assigned to be part of a bombing group targeting German U-boat facilities. In January '44 he was promoted to Major and awarded the Flying Cross. By 1945 he was promoted to full colonel and he continued to serve in the reserves after the war. In 1959 he was promoted to Brigadier General and in 1985 President Ronald Reagan promoted him to Major General (two stars) on the retired list. #VeteransDay
