Neil writes: "Paint came before the battle, mud and ochre smeared on by the palmful till the young men emerged from the creek bed wearing new skins. With fingertips they sketched confidence onto each other’s bodies, grooves and streaks, white-rimmed eyes and white-caked cheeks. Most of them would fight nude, nothing but paint against the staves and this so the fighting might be beautiful and the blood, if it came, shine bright. They sang softly as they worked.
