Question:
Is it frightening entering the Earth’s atmosphere to come home? What is the return like? @Birdietheknitter @im_therealdirtydan @bw24733 @mbuss2015 @_jenora_ @naominice22 @connelila @harold_dale563 @ekimsinnigcm @ideegamine @themattbayer @brianjbradley @codybrayshaw26 @jamez1231 @grickerson_24 @penny.reddy @jack_papp @solarianxiii @spiritedvoyager @mazzy1999 @breakinginreverse
Answer:
Entering the Earth’s atmosphere is quite benign. It’s the g’s of returning and when the parachute opens and tumbles you all about that’s what’s kind of frightening. #Swanny
Astronaut Steve “Swanny” Swanson just returned from orbit and had a chance to answer some of your Instagram questions. The “g’s” Swanny mentions refers to the “g-force” or “G-loads”, which is the amount of deceleration an astronaut feels against his body. During nominal Soyuz decent astronauts experience G-loads up to five times the force of gravity. NASA PAO
