Vultures consume more meat than all the other predators and scavengers combined on the plains of Africa. The hyenas feeding on the zebra likely killed it; hyenas, contrary to popular belief, are incredibly effective hunters (their kill rate is higher than lions). Vultures are in steep decline across Africa, which may be leading to an increase in predators and scavengers. The affect this will have on the plains eco-system is unknown but could result in higher incidence of rabies and other diseases. Shot on assignment in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
