Photo by @paleyphoto (Matthieu Paley). Fashionable? A #rhubarb #leaf to fend off the high-altitude sun? Why not! A #Wakhi man in Afghanistan's Pamir mountains. Rhubarb is an ancient plant, its stem and roots are full of vitamins - Wakhi people love to eat it in the summer - but its leaves are poisonous. From China, it traveled west to Europe, over the old Silk Road. It's also used as #medicine : The Guangzong emperor (1620-1621) was miraculously cured from some severe illness he got after having had a joyful time with four "beautiful women" sent to him by a high official - he was cured with rhubarb, naturally… I am posting images from 2012 expeditions to #Afghanistan's Pamir mountains, now focusing on food habits of high-altitude communities.
