TBT: i am often asked by younger hipsters about NYC in the 70s and 80s, that storied time when the city was filthy in every sense, from real filth that made wearing anything but all black an idiot move, to the visceral filth of pornography, crime, and sex. in between those 2 deliciously vile slices of bread was the music and clubs that operated in a world totally disconnected from what would be considered civilized society. club owners loved having underaged patrons like myself come in as they knew there'd be eager older men there to fawn over us and buy drinks, and this was true for gay and straight clubs. now, if i were to recommend one song to be your soundtrack to this period, i must bring you back to 1979. "meet you in the subway" was one of those songs that define NYC at that point in time for me – the industrial noise and rhythm of the city, the dark and dank of the night time streets and subways lit with low wattage incandescent bulbs, the sense of danger that created addictive excitement never knowing what strange characters you would meet. it matters not that this song was written and performed by a san francisco based band, CHROME, as this song is to me NYC. i first heard this song from a compilation record, subterranean modern, by ralph records when it was released in '79, and i still have my copy of it to this day. i was 14 years old that year, and it is not an overstatement to say how much this label shaped my aesthetic aurally and visually. the cover by gary panter is still fresh and inspired my graphic design bone. the bands on the disk brought my brain to places not found anywhere on the radio or tv [especially being introduced to Tuxedomoon, a band that every music geek should know]. it is important to note that all the new music of the 80s and 90s took shape in the late 70s – it was anti-nostalgia and anti-aesthetics – truly something that subliminally informed my practice as a designer, inventor and artist to this day. anyway, enjoy: http://youtu.be/YNjCugzVPqA #garypanter #newwave #underground
