Two part post by @vincentjmusi - Sometimes just picking up a camera is enough to scare off an animal. I once had to photograph Aristides, a very famous Lemur at what is now the Duke Lemur Center. He was very friendly and engaged except that every time I lifted my camera to my face, he would make his escape from my makeshift studio.
