When I started working for @ナショナルジオグラフィック in 1995 one of the biggest thrills for me as a young photographer was getting to know Dave Harvey. I was young, I did not know nearly as much as I thought I did & Dave would listen & talk about his experiences as a National Geographic photographer, a member of @Magnum Photos, and (a touchstone for me) staff member of the Topeka Capital-Journal (@cjonline) in Topeka, Kansas.
As a kid from #WesternKansas the Capital-Journal was nirvana. The director #RichClarkson regularly worked for @SportsIllustrated, and their staff included a Pulitzer-winning photographer #BrianLanker, while the other members had won every award in the industry. This included @roseleen , the DOP for @ナショナルジオグラフィック , #ChrisJohns, long-time editor of the same magazine, and @jimrichardsonng, a regular contributor to the @ナショナルジオグラフィック . When young photographers ask me how to make a career in the industry I have several ideas on how to they can make a mark, but the one thing they can't go and seek out is the luck I had to be born at a time and in a place that had these kinds of influences on a daily basis.
