Gleaning rice in Bangladesh. When I met Dadong Angga she was gleaning rice in a field in Bangladesh. That meant she was trying to thresh the last few grains out of the rice bundles the women behind her had already threshed. It was charity, and she might be able to get one bowl of rice to take home from her labors. Most food in our world is still grown by small farmers who do an incredible job but too many people like Dadong are still clinging to the edges of a precarious food supply, even in a country that is as fertile and productive as Bangladesh. Like many her problem has to do with food economics as much as farm productivity. If we are to feed the nine billion people projected to be living on Planet Earth in 2050 we will have to solve these kinds of problems as well as just growing enough food for everyone. Follow our National Geographic series #futureoffood as we explore all of these problems over the coming months.
