For Los Angeles Instagrammer Benjamin Heath (@benjaminheath), there's a difference between a portrait that you make and a photo that you take. "Make is such a strong word. I think it connotes a methodology or a particular rhythm to creating. If it’s going to be worthwhile you have to take time to make something. You have to hone your craft." Benjamin shares some of the methodology, craft and planning that goes into his own process of making portraits.

The first step is to spend time finding inspiration: peruse the books, websites and Instagram feeds of the photographers you love. Next, take the time to notice and mark down good locations as you pass through them or read about them and go when the lighting is right. Finally, consider working with an experienced model—they'll bring their own ideas and create the charge of a creative exchange.
