Earlier in my career I was debatably fortunate to be chosen to guide and photograph some of the world's best skiers and a #WarrenMiller film crew as they shot a segment in #Antarctica for one of the company's revered annual ski films, this one entitled "Extreme Winter" - the first-ever serious downhill #skiing expedition to the continent. After many years working as a ski photographer, I had often worried about inciting someone to get hurt displaying "Kodachrome Courage" and this production proved to be an #extreme example of a dilemma I have often subsequently faced as an #expedition photographer.
As the guide, hired by the aviation company that flew them to the Antarctic Peninsula, my responsibility was to keep everyone safe. When skier Mike Farny front-pointed up this steep and icy glacier to set up a jump, the guide part of me wanted to scream, "Are you crazy?" If he seriously injured himself, the nearest hospital was 1,700 miles away, assuming that our plane could take off and that weather was flyable the entire distance in a part of the world where even at full throttle, winds can push an aircraft backwards.
It isn't hard to guess, however, what the photographer part of me wanted, and guess which side won? #adventure @natgeocreative @natgeotravels
