Juanita, a mummy that has become known as the Inca Ice Princess was a sacrificial offering to the Inca gods. This well preserved & frozen mummy was discovered in 1995 by National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Johan Reinhard. The discovery at 19,000 ft was made after Reinhardt searched a crater as he descended Mt. Ampato. Juanita was approximately 11 years old & died between 1450-1480 c.e. (Common era) This photograph was made in Arequipa, #Peru. This photo was shot in 2010 as part of a larger story about the "Discovery of Machu Pichu". @instituteartist @Robert Clark
