Photo by @peteressick. One aspect of the carbon cycle is the role that carbon took in the history of evolution of life on Earth. It was about 550 million years ago that there was finally enough carbon in the ocean for shells to form. Many scientists believe that these calcium carbonate shells, or exoskeletons, were a major factor that made it possible for multi-climate animals to evolve during the Cambrian Explosion. Exoskeletons play a key role in protection from predators, support, and attachment for musculature. To illustrate this, I went to Sanibel Island in Florida, a good place to shoot pictures of shells. Because of its position on the Gulf of Mexico, lots of shells are washed up on the beach during storms. I found some small rocks with shells lying on and around them. There were some small waves breaking on the rocks. The waves were only about a foot tall, but I was able to sit down and hold the camera close to the shells as the waves broke over the rocks. I had to use an underwater housing for my camera, since the waves soaked it after each exposure. -excerpt from "Our Beautiful, Fragile World."
