Tom and Mary Walls’ home became a safe haven for their immediate family when Sandy hit their town Lavallette, NJ, last October. To their advantage, while other residents weren’t allowed access back to town, they were able to go ahead and gut everything in their home. Tom and Mary moved back in April 2013, but were also rebuilding their family-owned restaurant Bayside Cafe, in addition to their house. They didn’t have flood insurance on it’s original location and couldn’t continue to fix it up so they gave up the keys in March and moved on. Tom explained the experience of giving up his cafe of 24 years as traumatizing, especially for his children having grown up and worked in the restaurant. He remembers last Christmas as being a time of more sorrow than happiness, and knew things would never be the same again.
They walked away from the original location but had a place in Seaside Heights that was operated seasonally so they brought in their working equipment and turned into their new location. The cafe opened up the second week of May 2013 and they’ve been operating every day since. For all the loss they’ve endured, they bounced back with the support of longtime customers in their community. Photo by CNN’s @timlampe for #CNNSandy. #VSCOcam (4 of 5)
