X-RAYING “DIANA”: Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s “Diana” sculpture in the Great Stair Hall was X-rayed as part of a conservation project to restore its original gilding. The lighter portion of this image shows the wrought-iron armature inside the sculpture’s thin copper skin. Joints where sheets of copper are soldered together are visible along the top and left edges. For more information about the “Gilding Diana” project.
