It's common knowledge that getting down a climb can often be as hard or even harder (and more dangerous) than climbing up it. Big walls are sometimes an exception. Here, on a 2,000-foot overhanging cliff in Queen Maud Land, #Antarctica, anything we tossed down landed on a sloping snowfield below. Here Rick Ridgeway jettisons the National Geographic cameras (just kidding.) In reality, I had to lower my 50+ pounds of camera gear and film in a haul bag hanging off of my harness as I rappelled down the fixed ropes below. Shot on assignment for a National Geographic cover story for the February issue, 1998.
