It grows at high elevations where the beetle used to never get to. Now, with a warmer climate, the beetle can have a field day of the white bark because it never evolved a defense with pitch like the lodge pole pine. The good folks at the Forest Nursery have grown half a million white bark seedlings. They grow very slow and germination rates are low but they are finding successful methods. There are efforts to plant the seedlings, but since the tree can easily live to be several hundred years old, one has to ask will there be a suitable place on the planet for white bark pines to grow in the wild in a few hundred years? Human induced climate change is killing off this tree.
