Thunderclouds, Garnet Lake, Ansel Adams Wilderness, CA. Photo by @peteressick. Marketing. Do any of the photographers out there hate that word any more than I do? Edwin Land, the genius behind Polaroid, said that marketing is what you do when you don't have a good product. For many years I worked under this principle not so much as a grand plan, but I think I just must have known where my talents didn't lie. However, in recent years I have tried to spend more time home as a father, which meant a reduction in assignment income and more emphasis on - alas - self-promotion and marketing. Fortunately, my wife, Jackie, who besides having the ability to tolerate the whims of living with a photographer, has helped me considerably with marketing my work. This past few years she helped me to start doing workshops, give lectures, and sell limited edition prints. This photo, along with a few others from the Ansel Adams Wilderness, has been kind to me in regards to print sales and has helped keep me going financially for another year. I have found I really enjoy teaching workshops, giving lectures (especially to students), making prints, and don't mind too much sending out reminder e-mails about sales and marketing efforts. Surely a good product helps, but good marketing is becoming more essential for an arts professional in today's world. Perhaps a few of the most talented road warriors can still get by with a good product alone. But it's also possible to have a good product and be bankrupt, just like Polaroid.
