Masks and Piano. Photo by @peteressick. If you are over 50 you may remember the Bob Dylan line that "he not busy being born is busy dying." It is hard to say how many people were busy doing creative work or were busy with things not creative in 2012, but it is easy to say that most of us were just plain busy. To be busy is how we all want to appear, if only to avoid the stigma of being in unbusy. For the artist, being busy can go both ways. If you are busy you are working in your passion, but being too busy can mean the unpleasant fate of spreading yourself too thin. In the competitive arts world, many artists spend a lot of time at business and self-promotion, being busy at the not- too-inspiring task of hoping not to die financially. For me, I hope to spend more time in 2013 being busy being born, being busy trying to take photos the way that Dylan wrote songs in 1965. That's the kind of busy I would like to be.
