Today, we’re celebrating International Mountain Day, focused on restoring mountain ecosystems, with a project close to home.

Te Ahu Pātiki is 500 hectares of newly created public conservation land, including the summits of Te Ahu Pātiki/Mt Herbert and Mt Bradley, the two highest points in the Ōtautahi/Christchurch district, Aotearoa/NewZealand - the home of Macpac. The ultimate goal of Te Ahu Pātiki is the complete restoration of the park’s indigenous flora and fauna to bring the Maunga back to its inherent natural state. The significant area holds the peninsula’s highest wetlands and a range of plant and invertebrate species that are unique to the site. A connection to existing protected land also means there will be conservation land from the summits to the sea.

Te Ahu Pātiki Charitable Trust was a Macpac Fund for Good recipient – our way of giving back to non-profit organisations whose core focus is a long-term positive impact. When you refuse a bag in the store, we donate $0.20 to the Fund for Good, and these are the sorts of projects the fund supports.

The restoration project, which also guarantees public access to the network of walking tracks, is visible from Ōtautahi’s port hills.
