#WorkOfTheWeek is a striking portrait of Lady Helen Vincent by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925). 👗💄

John Singer Sargent was intensely cultured – an avid traveler fluent in French, Italian and German – and would frequently visit Venice. This is where he met Lady Helen Vincent and where this portrait was painted (you can just about glimpse the Grand Canal through the balustrade in the lower-left corner). Lady Helen Vincent was described as 'one of the beauties of the age, and a woman of a rare charm and distinction'. She was a member of “the Souls”, a salon of intellectual politicians, writers, scientists, and artists. As a trained nurse anaesthetist, Lady Helen would go on to serve with the Red Cross in Europe. She treated thousands of patients in often very dangerous conditions.
