“I’ve been coming to these woods with my twins, near where we live in south east London, since they were little. It’s my first and favourite escape whenever I need a break from the day-to-day, from work, from our phones.

Hidden in plain sight, it’s one of London’s greatest treasures — a place that once provided timber for Elizabeth I’s ships. Now, there are odd follies, a bat cave and the track bed of an old railway line, which makes it feel like you’ve climbed through C. S. Lewis’s wardrobe — stepping off the streets of south east London and into an ancient woodland.

The immediate switch into a world of adventure is what made it so exciting when the boys were small — but maybe even more so now! It’s the perfect place to step away from the things we surround ourselves with, and instead take time to enjoy walking and talking with each other, as well as the woodpeckers, owls, bugs and beetles that live there.
It’s a quiet reminder of how lucky we are to live in a city as beautiful as London.”
