The jury was impressed by Gates’s collecting practice, which in addition to the constellation of Black spaces on Chicago’s South Side that he is actively creating, includes a number of historic record collections, such as those of the godfather of house music, Frankie Knuckles.  Gates presented a special display of over five thousand records from Knuckles’s personal archive in the installation "A Song for Frankie” as part of the 2021 group exhibition “Social Works" at Gagosian New York. The artist presents of records from the collection in a piece on "Gagosian Quarterly," with contributions from Chantala Kommanivanh and Ron Trent.
