They’re handmade woven baskets made from palm leaves and decorated with colourful petals and incense to pass on as an offering to the land and the gods. What a creative way of praying & spreading love, expressing gratitude, and creating beauty on a daily basis. Within one household approximately 50 canang sari are offered in one day! I can’t think of an equivalent daily practice of offering back to the land that we do back home. I’ve taken inspiration from this symbol of gratitude, and everywhere I’ve been during the past year I’ve created a small altar in the home with items of personal significance to me. This keeps me grounded in new environments. I’ve started offering natural items I find such as flowers or shells to the altar, creating more purpose and a connection to nature 🙏🌟🌿. For me, this is a moment during my day to pause and consider what I’m thankful for in my life, for the guidance, the protection, and the support I feel around me. It is unrealistic to make and offer 50 canang sari a day especially when back home in the West, but taking inspiration from this and finding a personal unique daily ritual to take a moment to express gratitude I think is a beautiful thing. If you’re considering building your own gratitude altar at home, I recommend gathering some of your most precious personal items such as sentimental ornaments, crystals, jewellery, and decorating a small table. Make it fun and get creative! I found this handwoven throw in Sumba (see last image) that I’ve used to cover the table, and decorated with petals and shells found in Bali. I’ve placed my incense, sage, and palo santo here for cleansing, and added my favourite oracle cards and crystals. I also occasionally add photos and other items that are special to me - it’s constantly evolving and growing!
