"Our route on Jirishanca involved a deep embracing of uncertainty, and it is the ludicrous ice features that give the route its name - ‘Reino Hongo’ - the mushroom kingdom of Jirishanca. We ducked left of the lower SSE pillar, and followed our noses up mixed ridges of snow, rock and ice. We embraced runout slabs and overhanging ice, and danced delicately between cornices over a yawning rift. The weather window was painfully short, and options for descent a complete unknown. But we welcomed the uncertainty as friends, and were granted beautiful passage through some of the wildest mountain terrain that I have set my eyes on.
