Bwiti initiates use the psychedelic root bark of iboga, whose hallucinogenic properties have been known by the pygmy communities of the rainforests since time immemorial. The ceremonies stabilize the structure of the community and families, strengthening bonds through singing, music, and dance. The experience with the iboga root induces visions that connect with each other the ceremony participants. The Bwiti religion is widespread in Gabon and in recent years has crossed its borders, reaching Cameroon, Congo, Zaire, and Equatorial Guinea.
