Using light as his medium, Irwin was a pivotal participant of Light and Space, a 1960s art movement begun in Southern California that focused on multi-sensory, site-specific installation art and architectural interventions. Early in his career, Irwin experimented with painting thousands of miniscule dots in grid formations which could be observed only when viewed up close.
