The city gave birth to influential bands like Steel Pulse and nurtured globally celebrated Black British photographers such as Vanley Burke and Pogus Caesar as well as the "Handsworth Self Portraits" by Brian Homer. In his formative years, Matthew made a conscious choice to remain in his city, driven by a determination to unearth its hidden treasures. For UNDEFEATED’s Fall 23 campaign, Matthew photographed Birmingham City Football Club fans—known as the Bluenoses—as they celebrated the storied team both in and out of the stadium. This image depicts Richie Burberry in an iconic pub next to Birmingham City Ground, commonly referred to as the 'Roost,' after a BCFC match. Richie is a dedicated supporter of the Blues club and a Zulu Warrior foot soldier. Richie explained that when he was younger, he used to climb the corrugated fence and sneak into the grounds to watch the game. Football, for Richie and all the other supporters, is much more than a game; it's a way of life. The Zulu warriors were the first-ever multicultural firm to emerge in Birmingham in 1982. This was a time when BCFC fans were heckled by the opposing fans who would chant 'Zulu' at them. The Zulu name has evolved from its hooliganism roots to become somewhat of a community moniker to describe football supporters of the club. They also organize fundraisers and marches for charitable causes within the community. At present, Matthew is crafting his debut book, a visual chronicle of the past decade spent capturing the essence of his beloved city through the lens.
