Finally getting this butterfly tutorial up! Here are some things that I found most helpful when I was learning:
• Hold on to a bench or table, something solid and low that won't move on you!
Kick your legs in a scissor motion like in the video. Try to really go for the split; it won't look like this in the spin but it'll make it easier for your body to get used to doing this motion on the ice! It also makes for a great addition to an off-ice warm up :)
• I like to really use my right arm on the take-off of these things. I use it to start my momentum as I'm going down into the jump part, and I carry that circular motion all the way through the landing into the spin.
• Speaking of the right arm(or left arm if you're a lefty), really throw it! It might be scary, but it's so much easier to safely do a butterfly when you use your arm to get yourself up into the air. That was really the last part of the puzzle for me trying to learn, and then I figured out my right arm and suddenly I could do a really nice butterfly. The left arm stays checked out in front of you once you leave the ground so you have a sort of brace to get your legs moving from.
